Ep #30 - Kiss Marry Kill in the 60s: 1964
Cinema60 continues its series of Kiss, Marry, Kill, this time with a focus on the year 1964. As previously explained, it’s a variation on the ol’ FMK game, played year by year as we go through the decade. Bart and Jenna challenge each other to choose one film they love (“Marry”), one film they want to see (“Kiss”), and one film they hate (“Kill”) that was released in the year 1964.
While they’ve already covered some of their biggest favs in previous episodes, luckily for Bart and Jenna, 1964 was a good year in film all around. Rumblings of societal unrest to come later in the decade are apparent through all of the films they randomly chose. Bart chose three foreign films, while Jenna lazed out with three American choices, but surprisingly they found a thread linking them all together. All feature themes of being stuck in a holding pattern or forced into uncomfortable circumstances–from foreign experimental psychological torture films to stodgy studio-bound old Hollywood-style psychological torture films. The episode’s a bit of a deep-dive into the hopelessness of the human condition but, you know, in a fun way.
